Lobell & Bergman Set ‘Eisner’ As First Comedy Collaboration In 17 Years

Lobell & Bergman Set ‘Eisner’ As First Comedy Collaboration In 17 Years

Mike Lobell and Andrew Bergman, once partners in a thriving production company, are back together for the first time in 17 years. They are planning an October start in New York on Eisner, a film that Bergman scripted and will direct, and which Lobell is producing.

The film is a comedy about a young man trying to discover what happened to his family during WWll. Typical of Bergman’s scripts, nothing turns out the way Eisner had hoped or expected. The ensemble they’ve put together has Judith Light, Paul Reiser, Isla Fisher, the Serbian comic Branko Djuric, Rob Reiner and Audra McDonald. They are zeroing in on a lead actor for the title role. Robert Halmi Jr and Great Point Media are in discussions to finance.

In their heyday, the Lobell Bergman partnership brought films that included So Fine, The Freshman, Honeymoon in Vegas, It Could Happen to You and Striptease. Those were written and directed by Bergman, whose first two scripting credits were the Mel Brooks-directed Blazing Saddles and then the original Arthur Hiller-directed The In-Laws, which starred Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. Lobell and Bergman are using their old production moniker, but right now the plan is for a single picture. If it’s a hit, who knows?

This project was also mentioned by producer Mike Lobell back in November 2012:

Mike Lobell interview with Screen Daily about ‘Gambit’
But as you say, you’re proud of the movie. What’s next?

ML: I’m back with Andy Bergman, my old partner from back in the day, for the first time since Isn’t She Great [2000]. We’re doing an ensemble comedy called A Film By Alan Stuart Eisner with Robin Williams, Isla Fisher, Shirley MacLaine, Rob Reiner and Oliver Cooper from Project X. I’ve also got a love story called This Man This Woman based on a script by Frederic Raphael and I’m in talks with a major lead. And I have Airtight from a script by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais that Castle Rock’s Martin Shafer and Liz Glotzer will produce with me.

Production Begins on New Line Cinema Comedy “Tag”

Production begins this week on location in Atlanta for the new comedy “Tag,” directed by Jeff Tomsic (Comedy Central’s “Broad City”) for New Line Cinema. The film’s starring ensemble cast is led by Ed Helms (The “Hangover” movies, “We’re the Millers”), Jake Johnson (TV’s “New Girl”), and Hannibal Buress (“Neighbors”), with Jon Hamm (“Baby Driver,” TV’s “Mad Men”) and Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker, “The Town”).

or one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade—risking their necks, their jobs and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry “You’re It!” This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready. Based on a true story, “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.

The film also stars Annabelle Wallis (“The Mummy”), Rashida Jones (TV’s “Parks and Recreation”), Isla Fisher (“Now You See Me”) and Leslie Bibb (“Iron Man 2”).

Tomsic directs from a screenplay written by Mark Steilen (TV’s “Mozart in the Jungle”) and Rob McKittrick (“Waiting”), based on the Wall Street Journal article entitled “It Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being It.” The film is produced by Todd Garner, Mark Steilen and Sean Robins, with Hans Ritter serving as executive producer. Scooby Doo screenwriter commemorates movie’s 15th anniversary

Scooby Doo screen-writer James Gunn celebrated the 15th anniversary of the movie with a post on his Facebook page about his memories of working on the film. He shared a brief tidbit about Isla, how the movie was originally going to be “edgier” than the final cut was, and about how “bummed” he was at the poor reviews. Below is the tidbit about Isla, and you can read the full post on his Facebook page.

We shot in Australia. My favorite memory? Freddie Prinze Jr and Sarah Michelle Gellar had rented an enormous, mostly-unfurnished house out on the ocean. The cast, a few members of the crew, and I, had massive games of Nerf gun tag throughout the house trying to kill each other for hours. Truly some of the most fun I ever had. I also remember sitting in Lillard’s apartment late at night playing the game “Celebrity” with a group of celebrities. I was still pretty new to Los Angeles and the whole thing was a bit surreal. Oh, and I also remember doing a karaoke video in the touristy section of Surfer’s Paradise with me and Linda Cardellini and Isla Fisher, line dancing with weird hats and props to, I think, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun or something. I know I have that video – I think blackmailing Linda and Isla might be a good anniversary gift to myself. On a second thought, they could probably use it to blackmail me.

Jeff Tomsic is directing the pic, which is being produced by Todd Garner, Mark Steilen and Sean Robins.

Tag is slated for a June 29, 2018, release.
