Isla featured on the cover of The Daily Telegraph (UK)’s Magazine supplement yesterday, with a brand new photoshoot and interview! The interview and photoshoot were initially conducted at the start of the year, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Isla’s movie Blithe Spirit being pushed back, the publication of the feature was delayed, and the interview was re-done last month. It’s a really good interview – Isla talks about Blithe Spirit, why she pulled out of Guilty Party, how she’s handling the pandemic, her family and not talking about her kids publicly, some of her interests (collecting old tea sets), how she feels about aging, Marge In Charge, and her screenwriting. Isla Fisher: ‘In the middle of the night, I have those “I can’t quite breathe” moments’
The star of a new film adaptation of Blithe Spirit talks about life with Sacha Baron Cohen and having to cancel work due to Covid worries

In a low-key bakery not far from the Hollywood home she shares with her British actor/comedian husband Sacha Baron Cohen and their three young children, Isla Fisher is telling me about her latest role in a new film adaptation of Blithe Spirit, one of Noël Coward’s best-loved plays.

‘I was so nervous,’ she confesses, dipping a buttered baguette into a bowl of chicken soup. ‘Being an Australian in a British period drama! I was working with my dialect coach and I just thought, “If I get this accent wrong, I’m going to be in so much trouble.”’



It’s an unseasonably cold day when we meet – prior to the pandemic – and wrapped up in a brown coat complementing her trademark long red hair, wearing minimal make-up, she looks a decade younger than her 44 years. Having made an enviable career starring in popular Hollywood comedies – from playing the obsessive Gloria in Wedding Crashers (2005) to the lead role of Becky Bloomwood in Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009) – her facial expressions and deadpan humour have got her where she is today. And they’re front and centre in Blithe Spirit.

Directed by Edward Hall (son of former National Theatre director Sir Peter), this lively adaptation of the 1941 comedy classic tells the story of a crime novelist (Dan Stevens) visiting an eccentric mystic, Madame Arcati (Judi Dench), in search of inspiration. She then accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife (Leslie Mann), who becomes embroiled in a hilarious love triangle with his current wife (played by Fisher). ‘Judi Dench is the greatest living actress on the planet and I was in a scene with her. I mean, that’s pretty amazing.’

Scoop: THE GONG SHOW on ABC – Thursday, September 7, 2017

Celebrity judges Isla Fisher, Will Arnett and Courteney Cox are set to praise, critique and gong unusually talented and unique performers, on “The Gong Show,” THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network.

British comedic legend Tommy Maitland hosts. Music is provided by the house band Wilder Zoby and the Gong Show Orchestra.

Tonight’s acts include a man performing pizza dough acrobatics, an unconventional 80s-style cover band, a rat attempting to navigate an obstacle course, and women performing an illuminated whip routine.

At the end of the show, the winning act with the highest judges’ scores will receive a fabulous “The Gong Show” trophy and a check for $2,000 and 17 cents.

“The Gong Show” is produced by Den of Thieves, Electric Avenue Productions and Principato Young Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television and is taped in front of a live audience. “The Gong Show” is executive produced by Will Arnett, Evan Prager, Jesse Ignjatovic, Conrad Green, Peter Principato and Marc Forman. Jared Morell, Jordan Barrow, David Bohnert, Chris Choun and Dan Norris are co-executive producers.

“The Gong Show” is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC’s selected HDTV format with a 5.1 channel surround sound. A TV parental guideline will be assigned closer to the airdate.

Isla Fisher takes out AACTA Trailblazer Award

AACTA has named Isla Fisher as the recipient of this year’s AACTA Trailblazer Award, designed to recognise “the achievements, abilities and successes of an Australian screen practitioner who inspires others with their portfolio of work.”

The AACTA Trailblazer Award is a discretionary award, determined by the board and president of AFI | AACTA. It was first awarded to Rose Byrne at the 4th AACTA Awards.

After her start on Home and Away, Fisher broke in the States with 2005 comedyThe Wedding Crashers. She has since gone on to star in the likes of Definitely, Maybe; Confessions of a Shopaholic; and The Brothers Grimsby alongside husband Sasha Baron Cohen. Despite being a self-described ‘comic actress’, Fisher has also appeared in The Great Gatsby and the recent Nocturnal Animals.

Outside of acting, Fisher also published two teen novels at age 18; ‘Bewitched’ and ‘Seduced by Fame’. She has also co-written two scripts with Amy Poehler and her first children’s book ‘Marge in Charge’ was released earlier this year.

CEO Damian Trewhella said Fisher’s work in the international screen industry has added to Australia’s reputation for producing outstanding screen talent.

“From her breakout roles in Home and Away and the international comedy Wedding Crashers to her critically acclaimed dramatic performances in The Great Gatsby and Nocturnal Animals, Isla has carved a diverse career we hope serves as an inspiration to other Australian performers.

We also recognise Isla’s influential role as a champion for female comic actresses – a cause she has advocated for over a decade and which marries with one of AACTA’s most important aims – to foster talented Australian screen practitioners who serve to mentor and inspire the next generation of Australians to pursue their craft to its full potential.”

Isla Fisher said: “I’m so honoured to be recognised by the Australian Academy and my Australian peers as a trailblazer in film and television. That I am considered among those Australians who are inspiring the next generation of talent is a true honour. I’m looking forward to coming back to Sydney to accept the AACTA Trailblazer Award.”

Fisher will accept the award in person this Wednesday at the AACTA Awards Ceremony held at Sydney’s Star Event Centre.

Also in attendance will be Fisher’s husband Cohen, presenters Jessica Marais, Michael Caton, Marta Dusseldorp, Shane Jacobson, and Stephen Curry alongside guests Josh Thomas and Greta Scacchi.

The AACTA Awards will be televised on Channel 7 at 8.30pm with an encore screening on Foxtel.

Isla Fisher on living with Borat and Ali G, and Keeping up with the Joneses

She stars in Hollywood blockbusters, holidays with Bono and has an A-list husband by the name of Borat (or Brüno, or Ali G…). Yet Isla Fisher can walk down the street to barely a second glance. She tells Stella the secret of her extraordinary ordinary life

Nobody seems to notice Isla Fisher, who is browsing the fiction section at Waterstones in Hampstead.

It’s surprising, considering that the Australian actress has starred in global hits ranging from Wedding Crashers to The Great Gatsby, and is married to Sacha Baron Cohen, one of the most recognisable figures in television and film.

Both successfully remain under the radar, despite their high-profile careers.

Isla and Sacha, 45, split their time between Los Angeles and north London. I’m meeting Isla today to discuss her latest comedy, Keeping Up With the Joneses – and she admits few projects can lure her from their daughters Olive, eight, and Elula, six, and their eighteen-month-old son Monty.

“I’m lucky enough to be able to stay at home and be with my family,” she says. “I used to devour every script, but now I’m focused on my family life, which has brought me so much satisfaction in a deep way.”

Isla, petite and beautiful, is 40 but could pass for 25. Summery and stylish, she’s wearing a blue, batique-print, off-the-shoulder dress by Michael Kors.
