Sacha Baron Cohen Secretly Transforms Into Ali G For Oscars

Sacha Baron Cohen revealed after the Oscars that he had to sneak past Academy officials to transform himself into his Ali G alter ego, and now Deadline has the video proof. In this brief clip, seemingly taped with Cohen’s consent through a bathroom-stall door, the tuxedoed actor sits while his wife Isla Fisher applies his fake Ali G beard.

On Monday, Cohen told Good Morning Britain that Academy bosses — and, apparently, co-presenter Olivia Wilde — had no idea he was going to hit the stage as Ali G, and in fact had warned him not to pull any such stunts. “The truth is we actually had to sneak it in,” he told GMB. “The Oscars sat me down beforehand and said they didn’t want me to do anything out of order; they wanted me to actually just present it as myself.” He explained that Fisher faked a touch of food poisoning to get them into a special restroom. “What would I do without her?”

The Oscar officials had good reason to be suspicious. In 2012, Cohen — dressed in the military regalia of his fictional General Alladeen character from The Dictator — famously punked E!’s Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet by dousing him with what Cohen said was an urn-full of Kim Jong-il’s ashes. “It was his dream to come to the Oscars,” said Cohen-as-Alladeen to a deicdedly not-amused Seacrest. “Now if somebody asks you who you are wearing, you can say Kim Jung-il!”

Oscars 2016: Sacha Baron Cohen smuggled in Ali G costume and changed in disabled toilet

Sacha Baron Cohen spent 40 minutes in the disabled toilet getting ready to present at the Oscars on Sunday night.

The 44-year-old actor took to the stage in character as perhaps his most famous alter-ego – Ali G. However, Academy Awards bosses had actually banned him from presenting as anyone but himself, meaning that he and his wife Isla Fisher had to go to extreme lengths to smuggle in Ali G’s famous beard and beanie hat.

“The truth is we actually had to sneak it in…” Sacha laughed during an interview on Good Morning Britain on Monday morning. “The Oscars sat me down beforehand and said they didn’t want me to do anything out of order, they wanted me to actually just present it as myself. But luckily my wife put on the Ali G beard in the disabled toilets and I managed to get away with it. What would I do without her?”

Isla was standing alongside Sacha as they were interviewed en route into the Vanity Fair Oscar’s party and admitted she had to use her acting skills to pull off the stunt.

“I had to pretend that he wasn’t feeling well in the bathroom so that no-one…” she admitted, when Sacha jumped in adding: “I was in the disabled toilet for 40 minutes sticking the beard on. I had to claim food poisoning.”

As Ali G took to the stage to present scenes from Best Picture nominee Room alongside Olivia Wilde, he took the opportunity to joke about the diversity issue currently causing mass debate in Hollywood.

“I know what you was thinking when I walked on, here comes yet another token black presenter,” he said. “But it ain’t just me brethren who has been overlooked, it is all people of all colours. How come there is no Oscra (sic) for those hard-working yellow people with tiny dongs. You know – the Minions.”

However, Sacha admitted he was unsure how the quip would go down with the star-studded audience.

“There was a few moments…” he said. “I was a bit worried how they’d react to the first gag but I bumped into (host) Chris Rock on the way on and pitched him the gig and he gave me the thumbs up, so I went for it.”

How to Master Isla Fisher’s Oscars Beauty Look

“Playful and fun” is how makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani describes Isla Fisher’s makeup look for the Academy Awards on Sunday night. Arriving on the arm of her husband, Academy Award presenter Sacha Baron Cohen, Fisher hit the carpet in a white embellished Marchesa gown, which served as the inspiration for the fresh-faced look.

“Instead of going with the romance of the dress, we went against it,” says Bedrani, who created contrast with a pop of color on Fisher’s lips using Dior Contour lip liner ($30) and a swipe of Rouge Dior lipstick in Royale ($35).

Playing with muted shades for the rest of Fisher’s look, Bedrani turned to Dior’s limited-edition State of Gold 5 Couleurs eyeshadow palette in Eternal Gold ($63), opting for a light shimmer dusted across the lids and a dark copper tone on the crease and along the lash line to extend it out.

Using a brush to apply Diorshow Kohl liner in Black ($32), Bedrani lined the top lashes (“I didn’t want it to look harsh”) before finishing the eyes with a coat of the new Diorshow Maximizer 3-D lash primer ($28.50) and two applications of the new Diorshow Mono eyeshadow in Gallery ($29.50). “Since the eye makeup was soft, it was very important to bring out those lashes!” says Bedrani.

Fisher’s cheeks were contoured and bronzed with Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstar Bronze & Glow ($68) before being dusted in Diorblush Glowing Gardens’ Vibrant Color powder blush in Floral Pink ($44).

LA Times: Did Olivia Wilde look surprised by what her co-presenter, Sacha Baron Cohen, said when the two were paired together to introduce scenes from best picture nominee “The Room”? Well she was. “I tried to warn you ahead of time,” Cohen’s wife, Isla Fisher, said to Wilde backstage. “No, it was better that way,” Wilde said. Behind the women, Cohen posed for photos still in character as his altar ego, Ali G.

News.com.au: Isla Fisher — who’d helped her presenter husband Sacha Baron Cohen smuggle his Ali G costume into the Oscars earlier — chatted with her former Wedding Crashers co-star Vince Vaughn as she held a giant cheeseburger from an In-N-Out stand at the Basil Walter-designed party space.
