Isla Fisher: My co-star thought I was bulimic

Isla Fisher claims her co-star assumed she had an eating disorder when she was suffering from morning sickness on a film set.

The Australian actress has just finished filming Burke and Hare – a black comedy set in Scotland about two Irish migrants who killed people in order to sell their bodies for scientific research.

The low-budget film stars Simon Pegg and was directed by John Landis, who also directed Michael Jackson’s Thriller promo.

Isla said that while shooting the film she was struggling with morning sickness but Simon just assumed she was making herself ill in order to keep slim.

“I was actually pregnant during the shooting and I had severe morning sickness and I didn’t eat anything and I just vomited all the time,” she told BBC Breakfast Show “Simon Pegg is the least observant actor in the planet because he didn’t notice. I think he presumed I was just a typical Hollywood bulimic actress rather than the fact that I was severely sick.”

The 34-year-old star – who has just given birth to her second child with Sacha Baron Cohen – launched her acting career on Australian soap opera Home and Away.

As hoped, Isla is attending the world premiere of Burke & Hare in London tonight! This is her first major public appearance in over a year. She looks gorgeous in a little red and black dress with a black jacket and her dark red hair down. She posed on the red carpet with her co-stars Andy Serkis and Simon Pegg. Below are a few preview photos, and I will add full coverage (photos/news tidbits/quotes/videos/etc.) tomorrow!

It’s great to see Isla on the red carpet again!

Isla Fisher’s My London

Home is…
Wherever my family is.

Where do you live in London?
In Marylebone, but I would love to live permanently at Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair and eat high tea every day.

What was the last play you saw in London?
War Horse at the National Theatre; the puppets were amazing and it was very moving.

What advice would you give a tourist?
Don’t wear a hood.

Which shops do you rely on?
I love Ottolenghi in Islington for breakfast; everything in there is incredible from the salads to the cakes and coffee. My favourite kids’ store is Petit Aimé on Ledbury Road, and for one-stop shopping nothing beats Topshop, if you can brave the loud pop music. Rellik in Ladbroke Grove is amazing for vintage clothing and one-off pieces.

What’s the best meal you’ve ever had in London?
Amaya on Motcomb Street in Knightsbridge is the best place in the world for Indian fusion cooking.

What’s your earliest London memory?
I went to Madame Tussauds with my parents when I was four and I remember being mesmerised by the frozen figures.

“Burke And Hare” gallery updates

I’ve updated the Gallery with new stills, posters and trailer screencaps from Isla’s upcoming movie Burke & Hare. The film is to be released in the UK next week, so new material is slowing leaking out, including the 2 UK posters I’ve just added and the still.

Hopefully we’ll get more Burke & Hare goodies next week, and with any luck, Miss Fisher will be at the world premiere in London on Monday!

EDIT: Another still has popped up! Plus, the film now has an official Facebook page at facebook.com/BurkeAndHareMovie.

‘Hollywood left me disillusioned’

Isla Fisher is “frustrated” by many of the movie roles she’s been offered because they were so small.

The actress was thrilled when she won the part of Gloria in 2005 movie Wedding Crashers as it meant she got to act alongside Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Gloria is an over-exuberant woman who becomes obsessed with Vince’s character Jeremy after sleeping with him, and the part saw Isla’s comedic timing praised.

She was sure it would lead to bigger and better things for her in Hollywood, and was dismayed when work offers didn’t live up to her expectations.

“After I did Wedding Crashers, I felt really optimistic about my future, but there weren’t the opportunities I’d imagined to follow such a big commercial movie,” she explained.

“The roles offered were to play the girlfriend of another comedian. They would get to do the joke, and you’d roll your eyes. I was a little disillusioned and ultimately grew more and more frustrated.”

Due to this, Isla has started developing her own ideas for movies. She is cagey when it comes to specifics, but is sure some of them will be hits at the box office.

The 34-year-old is still getting used to producing and writing, explaining it is very different from acting. “Things move a lot slower. It’s definitely more frustrating than being an actor for hire, but it’s a lot more exciting, creating what you’re going to play, thinking about what you do best, what your shtick is,” she told Culture magazine.

“I can sit through a bad dramatic movie and still be engaged, but I can’t sit through a bad comedy, people trying to be funny when they’re not. It has to work.

Isla Fisher Tests Comedy On Cohen

Isla Fisher tries out all her new comedy characters on her husband Sacha Baron Cohen before anyone else.

The ‘Wedding Crashers’ actress – who has two children with her funnyman spouse – admits they can’t help but discussing their work at home, and she loves testing out new ideas on him first because he is the “funniest” man she knows.

When asked if they compete against each other for laughs, she replied: “No, but I definitely can’t help myself from trying out new characters on Sacha. I think in all relationships, particularly if you’re in the same field, you end up bringing work home with you. At the same time, you never want your relationship to be just about work.

“Sacha’s the funniest man I know, and that’s on and off camera.”

Isla loves being a comedy actress, but admits she hasn’t found parts easily.

She explained to Culture magazine: “Even though I studied comedy, I didn’t know I could do it for a living. It felt like too much fun.

“After I did ‘Wedding Crashers’, I felt really optimistic about my future, but there weren’t the opportunities I’d imagined to follow such a big commercial movie. The roles offered were to play the girlfriend of another comedian. They would get to do the joke, and you’d roll your eyes. I was a little disillusioned and ultimately grew more and more frustrated.”

Isla is currently based at home with their daughter Olive and their second child – who was born in secret this summer – where she has been working on a new film idea.

She explained: “I’ve actually been working on a movie idea my husband came up with, a character for me, which I do around the house.”
