“The Great Gatsby” leads AACTA nominations

Huge congratulations to Isla for her Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Aussie AACTA Awards!

The Great Gatsby leads AACTA nominations

Baz Luhrmann’s blockbuster The Great Gatsby has led the nominations for the 3rd annual AACTA Awards with 14 nods, closely followed by Kim Mordaunt’s independent film The Rocket

The two are vastly different Australian features. The Great Gatsby is a razzle dazzle adaptation of an American classic novel, while The Rocket, which earned 12 nominations, is a low-budget, foreign-language feature, filmed entirely in Laos with a lead actor plucked from the streets.

It means come January, Leonardo DiCaprio will face off against former street kid Sitthiphon “Ki” Disamoe for Best Lead Actor, while Luhrmann and Mordaunt are both in the running for Best Direction, alongside Ivan Sen for Mystery Road and the 17 directors of The Turning.

The two features are also up for Best Film alongside Dead Europe, Mystery Road, Satellite Boy and The Turning.

The AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) CEO Damian Trewhella says the nominations show the range of films our country is producing.

“The film and television productions that have been acknowledged this year are so incredibly diverse and as an ensemble illustrate our breadth of screen talent,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Isla at the Australians In Film Awards Gala

Last week Isla attended the Australians In Film Awards Gala in Beverley Hills, and looked super chic in a little black lace dress. Isla was on hand to present the Orry-Kelly International Award to her The Great Gatsby director Baz Luhrmann (who was not present), and posed backstage with Robert Pattinson.

Isla Fisher presented Baz Luhrman with one of two Orry-Kelly International awards tonight. The Great Gatsby director couldn’t be there to accept in person, so she announced that she’d take home his boomerang statuette, teasing: “My first award!” Isla also couldn’t resist comparing the title of the honor to the R&B singer with a very similar name: R. Kelly. When Rob presented the second of the statuettes to Blue Tongue shortly after Isla, he said he was chagrined she’d already made the first R. Kelly-related crack. Then, he jokingly referred to the honor as “the golden shower award,” earning the evening’s biggest roar of laughter from the crowd. In typical self-deprecating form, Rob also wondered out loud if he should ditch his “insanely” generic written speech, but ultimately decided against it after the crowd urged him to keep reading.

“The Great Gatsby” HD Film Screencaptures

The Great Gatsby is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the US today, and I have a fabulous bunch of HD screencaptures from the film for you! I really enjoyed the film – it had a great cast, and looked and sounded great, and it’s probably one of my favourites of the year so far. Isla was ravishing as Myrtle and I thought she gave a really different performance from anything we’ve seen her do before – I was quite taken aback at how different she was, although did notice some of her trademark quirks thrown in too. I just wished we could’ve seen more of Myrtle!

Enjoy the beautiful screencaptures in our Gallery, and don’t forget that they will obviously contain spoilers!! If you haven’t seen the movie yet then be sure to track down a copy 🙂

Isla on Daybreak and This Morning in the UK

Whilst in London to promote Now You See Me, Isla appeared on talk shows This Morning and Daybreak. She went solo on This Morning, and talked about Now You See Me, the stunts in that movie and her co-stars, and also about The Great Gatsby. She also explained the rumour about her and Sacha complaining about Leonardo DiCaprio’s noisy party at Cannes – they did crash the party and pretended to complain, but it was a joke – and Isla let slip a (slightly) naughty word when recounting the story, which she was very apologetic about! Over on This Morning she was accompanied by Jesse Eisenberg, and they chatted about similar things, plus their careers. Isla looked pretty in an outfit from Australian fashion label Lover.

And we have all the coverage for you! To start with, screencaptures and stills from both shows are in the Gallery, and I’ve also uploaded both interviews for you in our Video section. Links to everything are below…..

Isla Fisher opens up to Cosmo!

Star of The Great Gatsby, and Now You See Me, Isla Fisher is the perfect Cosmo cover star! In the July issue she reveals all about the rejection she experienced at the start of her career, and how she overcame it.

You’d think having a famous husband like Sacha Baron Cohen, you’d be sorted in Hollywood. But apparently not! Isla revealed exclusively to Cosmo: “I really have had no help. In fact, the one time I did ask for help was after my agent in LA fired me. I was auditioning for all sorts of things but kept getting told ‘no’, so she just fired me! So anyway, I said to Sacha, who was my boyfriend at the time, ‘Can you ask your agent if they’ll represent me?’ And his agent said, ‘No way.’ It was the only favour I’d ever asked, and I was like, ‘OK
great’. But it spurred me on.”

Looking at Isla now – especially in this month’s Cosmo – you’d never realise she was once a wallflower. Speaking about her childhood, she said: “I went to something like six different schools before the age of 12, so I was always the new girl and had to make friends quickly. It was difficult at the start because I was very bookish – I was literally sat in the corner reading books, with no friends. So I learnt to be funny and to take the piss out of myself in order to ingratiate myself. I think it’s one of the best skills in life.”

“The good thing about a drama is that everyone takes it seriously so you do feel like you can lose yourself in a scene. With comedy I can never do that because I’m always thinking ‘what’s something funny I could do now, how can I improvise, how can I make people laugh?'”
