‘Wolf Like Me’ Review: Josh Gad, Isla Fisher Shine in Peacock’s New Dramedy

In “Wolf Like Me,” Josh Gad plays Gary, a widowed father, struggling to raise his troubled 11-year-old daughter Emma (Ariel Donoghue). When Mary (Isla Fisher) literally crashes into their lives, Gary’s astounded to see how quickly Mary can reach his anxiety-riddled kid. Soon an emotional love affair takes off. But, Mary can’t escape into the fantasy family because she’s carrying around a potentially deadly secret that the six-episode show’s title hints at. But no matter how fast or far Mary runs, the universe keeps shoving Gary into her path.

Abe Forsythe, best known for writing “Little Monsters,” a charming 2019 movie that imagines zombies threatening a kindergarten class, brings werewolves to the classic rom-com in “Wolf Like Me,” whose six half-hour episodes all drop on Peacock on January 13. Forsythe’s writing brings out the best in Gad. Usually relegated to over-the-top caricature, a role he’s performed well over the years, Gad here stretches his wholesomeness to showcase a range of pain, confusion and anger. Fisher shines here as well. It’s been over a decade since her fabulous turn as Rebecca Bloomwood in “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” But Fisher’s always possessed the talent of a leading lady in projects like “The Great Gatsby” and “Arrested Development.” Here, she plays up a tender heart hiding behind wall of quick-witted jokes.

Donoghue, as the suicidal and depressed Emma, proves an impressive talent to watch. Holding her own with veterans in a subdued role would be a challenge for any actor. She flashes a sliver of hope waiting for Gary to be honest about his feelings, and her panic attacks are frighteningly authentic.

Isla Fisher & Josh Gad Tease “Twists & Turns” in Dark New Peacock Series Wolf Like Me

E! recently spoke to Isla and Josh Gad about their upcoming TV series Wolf Like Me:

Isla Fisher & Josh Gad Tease “Twists & Turns” in Dark New Peacock Series Wolf Like Me
E! News got the inside scoop on Isla Fisher and Josh Gad’s new genre-bending series Wolf Like Me, set to launch on Peacock in January.

Isla Fisher and Josh Gad’s new Peacock series is, put simply, like nothing else you’ve ever seen before.

Dubbed Wolf Like Me, the six-episode show premiering in January follows Gary (Gad), an emotional wreck struggling to provide for his daughter since the death of his wife, and Mary (Fisher), who has a secret she can’t bring herself to share with anyone.

Sounds like a run-of-the-mill drama, right? Not exactly.

“I’ve done dramas—between Marshall and Murder on the Orient Express and Love & Other Drugs, I’ve definitely dabbled—but I’m always looking for a challenge in any script, and with Wolf Like Me, there was a freshness about it,” Gad exclusively told E! News. “It was unlike anything I’d ever read before or seen before and it felt like a really exciting challenge, a really exciting opportunity.”

Fisher was in complete agreement, describing Wolf Like Me as “an interesting melt of genres.”

“And it felt like an original and fun opportunity to tell a love story, an adult love story,” the Australian actress added, attributing the genius of the show to creator-director Abe Forsythe. “But focusing on the dark side as well as the light.”

“I know that a lot of people are trying to make that happen and I guess it’s a really important — or at least joyful memory for a lot of people. So hopefully we can make it come true. I’m definitely not in the loop as to what’s happening right now though.”

The show will premiere on US online streaming service Peacock and its Aussie equivalent Stan on January 13th. All 6 30 minute episodes will be released that day.
