“Burke & Hare” to be released in US on September 9th

This week’s indie release-date updates brings news that IFC Films will handle John Landis’ first feature in 12 years, the black comedy “Burke & Hare.” It’s set for September 9.

“Burke & Hare” is the based on the true story of William Burke and William Hare, two 19th-century Edinburgh grave robbers who discovered there was a good business in providing dead bodies for medical schools.

The film stars Simon Pegg, Andy Serkis, Isla Fisher and Tom Wilkinson.

Shot at London’s Ealing Studios, the film was released nearly a year ago in the UK to unkind reviews. “An inept black farce that couldn’t be more lifeless if it was one of their victims,” wrote Total Film. The Guardian was marginally less damning, describing it as “more ‘Carry On’ than classic.”

Isla to join “What To Expect When You’re Expecting”?

Isla is apparently in talks to star in the pregnancy comedy What To Expect When You’re Expecting.

Vulture broke the news on Tuesday:

We’re also told by knowledgeable sources that Lionsgate has set Isla Fisher for a part that had been offered to Bridesmaids co-writer and star Kristen Wiig, who passed owing to her rigorous Saturday Night Live commitment this fall. The studio is also said to be in negotiations with The Office and Hangover II star Ed Helms to play one of the expectant fathers, and similarly, we’re told that Lionsgate has been eager to recruit another TV star in Matthew Morrison, but his incredibly tight schedule for Glee and his current tour in support of his solo album means it’s not likely he’ll be able to make his schedule work.

As you might expect, What to Expect follows six couples of varying ages and backgrounds in the run-up to delivery of their babies, in a manner very similar to New Line Cinema’s ensemble confections like He’s Just Not That Into You and Valentine’s Day. (Or, as one wag put it to Vulture, “We’ve been calling it He Was That Into You, So Much So That He Knocked You Up.”)

IndieWire.com posted more information yesterday, and also spoke to Ed Helms’ reps who said that he is not involved in this movie.

Based on the perennially popular advice book for the soon-to-be-parents, the film, penned by Shauna Cross and Heather Hach, will follow the template that’s proven so popular in the likes of “Valentine’s Day” and “He’s Just Not That Into You,” following half-a-dozen couples all preparing to bring new life into the world. Cameron Diaz has been set for the lead for a while now, and last night Jennifer Lopez looked to be getting in on the action as well. Now Vulture, who seemed to have the Lopez scoop before Deadline, also suggests that two names familiar from recent comic hits are joining the film as well.

As well as Lopez, the site suggests that Isla Fisher, who somehow hasn’t quite become the giant star she looked to be after “Wedding Crashers” (we can all blame “Confessions of a Shopaholic” for that one), is set for a supporting role, and that Ed Helms, who’s had a colossal hit with “The Hangover Part II,” is in talks to play one of the expectant fathers.

However, the studio and director Kirk Jones (”Nanny McPhee”) haven’t had their way with everyone: “Bridesmaids” star Kristen Wiig was the first choice for Fisher’s role, but the actress passed owing to her commitments to the next season of “Saturday Night Live”—which answers at least one of the questions we were asking last week, as to why Wiig hasn’t yet capitalized on the success of her giant smash hit. Similarly, and despite what Deadline reported yesterday, “Glee” star Matthew Morrison was being courted for a part, but supposedly his commitments to that show, and to the promotion of his solo album, look unlikely to make that work.

It’s a little fishy in both those cases, considering that Helms is tied to “The Office” for the next season as well, but still seems to be involved (and the actor managed to shoot “The Hangover Part II” while remaining involved in the show)—it seems likely that Wiig, at the very least, simply wasn’t keen. And we’re not surprised: playing comic relief to Cameron Diaz would have been a waste of her talents.

Filming begins in four weeks, and Lionsgate has already bagged the “Bridesmaids” slot next summer, with the film opening on May 11, 2012, so we’d expect to see the rest of the cast come together shortly.

Isla films guest appearance on HBO’s “Bored To Death” series

Well this has come as a surprise! Isla was spotted filming what is being called a ‘cameo’ for the HBO TV series Bored To Death in Coney Island (New York City) on Monday! She was seen filming with star of the show, Jason Schwartzman, and was looking very smart in a cream and navy skirt suit. I think Isla will be playing a detective on the show. The outline of Bored To Death is as follows:

… stars Jason Schwartzman as a fictional Jonathan Ames – a writer based in Brooklyn, New York City, who moonlights as an unlicensed private detective.

You can find the official Bored To Death website here, although I haven’t seen any mention of Isla on there.

Unfortunately that’s all I can find about Isla’s appearance on the show so far! I’ll keep you posted when we get more details on this appearance. We have 28 HQ photos of her on the set in our Gallery for you to browse through…

Isla at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic

I was so busy working on our new Gallery, that I almost forgot to add these new photos! Last Sunday, Isla attended the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in New York City, looking the picture of summer perfection in a little white flowery dress, with orange wedge heels and her trademark red hair left naturally down. I absolutely love Isla’s look here! She was snapped enjoying the event with her good friend Naomi Watts, and the twosome also posed with fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman, the ultra-classy Julianna Margulies, and director Paul Haggis. It looks like she had a bit of a Marilyn moment on the red carpet too! Over 40 photos have been added to our Gallery, only a handful of which are in HQ at the moment, but all are very pretty 😉

Joel Edgerton joins “The Great Gatsby”

Joel Edgerton to Play Tom Buchanan in ‘The Great Gatsby’

Australian actor Joel Edgerton has nabbed the role of Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s all-star adaptation of The Great Gatsby, being made in 3D by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

THR reported last weekend that Luhrmann was zeroing in on Edgerton and actor Luke Evans, both of whom took part in readings with the director. Edgerton ultimately won the role.

Buchanan is one of the key characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s story of love and discontentment among the rich in lavish 1920s Long Island, N.Y.

Leonardo DiCaprio is attached to play the wealthy and mysterious Jay Gatsby, while Tobey Maguire is playing Nick Carraway, who in the novel is the narrator. Carey Mulligan is playing Gatsby’s love, Daisy Buchanan, who is married to Tom Buchanan, a wealthy man having an affair with a mistress (played by Isla Fisher) in the city.

Ben Affleck circled the role earlier this year but ultimately couldn’t make the dates work with Argo, the political thriller that will be his next directorial effort.

That movie is eyeing a September start, while Gatsby is heading for a start in August.

Scans from Red (UK) magazine

Isla news is slow again (I’m not sure what she’s up to at the moment, professionally – maybe recording for Rise Of The Guardians?), so I’m getting back to work on our new Gallery. To tide you over til that’s ready though, I just came across some scans from Red magazine that Isla was on the cover of a couple of months ago and thought I’d add them to our current gallery. The magazine used her 2009 Allure photoshoot, but it is a new interview!
