James Marsden On New Film ‘Bachelorette,’ Inevitable ‘Bridesmaids’ Comparisons

Isla’s Bachelorette co-star James Marsden recently spoke to MTV about working on the film. Of course, MTV.com have a horrible country restriction on the video, so unless you’re in the US you won’t be able to watch it (it won’t feature Isla), but I expect the article itself pretty much sums up what he says:

As Zooey Deschanel recently gushed, it’s a really great time for female-driven comedy. Thanks to the success of flicks like “Bridesmaid” and all those new TV shows (think: “2 Broke Girls” and “New Girl”), it’s giving other lady comedies the green light.

And next up is “Bachelorette,” which revolves around a group of women asked to be the bridesmaids to a woman they used to bully back in high school. Currently shooting in the Big Apple, it’s written and directed by a lady, Leslye Headland, and features some of our favorite actors like Isla Fisher, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Scott and James Marsden.

We caught up with James recently at the “Straw Dogs” premiere where he gushed about the current state of lady comedy and potential “Bridesmaids” comparisons.

“Again, very different just trying to keep people confused; if you never know then I’m happy,” he said of his upcoming project and diverse resume. “This has been around for a while—there’s gonna be comparisons drawn. It’s a great R-rated comedy. It’s really about the girls.”

So what happens in the flick? “All hell breaks loose, many drinks and stumbling around the city,” he said. “It’s just a good ‘Bridesmaids,’ sort of ‘Hangover’-type movie.”

What differs between “The Hangover” and “Bachelorette,” however, is who is heading up the marquee. And like “Bridesmaids,” this is all about the ladies, which pleases James. “You guys need your turn, that’s right,” he said. “And ‘Bridesmaids’ was a terrific example of that.”

Now that the ladies are rightfully making us laugh, James is planning male domination in the tearjerker category. “I got all the guys together. We’re planning a ‘Steel Magnolias’ remake. You guys go into the raunchy comedies. Imagine ‘Pretty Woman’ with a male prostitute? I like that movie.”

Not a bad idea at all.
